Billie Eilish and Phoebe Bridgers lend their voices to My Chemical Romance's new animation
The artists participate in the animated short Prelude to the End, a commemorative project accompanying the twentieth anniversary of the iconic album The Black Parade.
Singer Billie Eilish and songwriter Phoebe Bridgers surprised fans by joining the voice cast of a new rock-related audiovisual project. Both artists participate in the animated short film titled Prelude to the End, developed by My Chemical Romance in collaboration with visual artist Lauren Tsai. The news caused a strong reaction among fans of various branches of alternative music.

In the animation's plot, the story follows a student named Astrid, a character voiced by Lauren Tsai. The narrative unfolds at a boarding school located in New England that faces a severe problem with trash accumulation. When the protagonist's sketchbook falls down a disposal chute, she decides to go after the object and ends up entering a surreal universe where forgotten concepts and thoughts take on a life of their own.
In this fantastical setting, Phoebe Bridgers takes on the role of Astrid's sister, while Billie Eilish voices a friend of the main character. The voice cast also brings together unusual names from other areas of pop culture, such as renowned game developer Hideo Kojima and actor John C. McGinley. The direction and visual aesthetics of the project bear Lauren Tsai's striking signature.
The release of the short serves as part of the celebrations for two decades of The Black Parade, the acclaimed album released by My Chemical Romance in 2006. The animation's soundtrack is driven by the track The End, the song that opens the conceptual record. To celebrate the historic date, the band has prepared commemorative editions of the material and a series of large-scale live performances.
As part of the release strategy, Prelude to the End was scheduled to be screened on the big screen before the band's shows at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The screenings took place on Friday and Saturday nights, marking the conclusion of a five-sold-out-concert residency at the traditional Californian venue.
The collaboration reinforces Billie Eilish's closeness to the rock and indie scene, besides demonstrating her artistic versatility by exploring voice acting in animations. So far, there is no official confirmation regarding the wide availability of the short on digital platforms for the global public, but the reaction among fans on social media has been intense. Billie Global BR will continue to follow any new information regarding the singer's next steps.
