Billie Eilish lends her voice to My Chemical Romance's animated short film
The singer is part of the voice cast for the emotional short film Prelude to the End, released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the album The Black Parade.
My Chemical Romance surprised fans by releasing an ambitious animated short film titled Prelude to the End. The production arrives to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of their iconic third studio album, The Black Parade. The musical and visual news was accompanied by an expanded edition of the classic 2000s record, packed with bonus tracks eagerly awaited by fans of the alternative rock band.
To bring this emotional story to life, the group gathered a stellar voice cast that features the participation of Billie Eilish. In addition to the artist behind HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, the project also features Phoebe Bridgers, expanding the band's connection with major names in contemporary music who share a striking and emotive artistic aesthetic.
With a runtime of about seven minutes, the work blends traditional hand-drawn animation with stop-motion techniques. Direction was handled by visual artist and actress Lauren Tsai, who also wrote the screenplay and stars as the protagonist Astrid. In the plot, a strict boarding school student ends up falling into an underground world of trash after searching for her confiscated sketchbook.
In this surreal and poetic journey, the main character receives essential support from her sister, voiced by Phoebe Bridgers, and a friend, whose voice is played by Billie Eilish. The heavy-hitting cast also features unusual appearances such as game designer Hideo Kojima and actor John C. McGinley, enriching the playful and dark universe created by Tsai.
The visual narrative is driven by the opening track of My Chemical Romance's conceptual album. The plot addresses deep themes such as youth, the relationship with artistic creativity, and the relentless pursuit of expressing one's own truth. The director revealed that the invitation was the realization of a childhood dream, a period when she already created videos inspired by the group's songs.
This is not Tsai's first partnership with prominent names from the current indie and pop scene, having previously directed the animated music video for Cool About It for the supergroup Boygenius. The release of the short serves as a warmup for the special screenings preceding the final shows of the band's commemorative residency in Los Angeles.
For Billie Eilish fans, her participation in the project reinforces her artistic versatility and her movement across different strands of pop culture and alternative rock. Although there is no confirmation of new parallel vocal projects announced by the singer at the moment, her presence in a production of such historical importance for rock certainly marks another unforgettable moment in her career.
